Boston PainCare is pleased to offer a complimentary workshop series. The goal of the BPC workshop series is to improve the lives of its patients by providing education and teaching new skills.

These workshops cover a wide range of topics related to quality of life, increase in function, and reduction in pain. BPC’s complimentary workshops are open to patients, all members of the pain community, and their families.

Introduction to Boston PainCare
Led by Dr. Counihan, this workshop is designed for our new patients to learn about:

  • How Boston PainCare is different from other pain centers
  • The many features of our patient-centered, integrated care
  • The difference between Acute, Chronic, and Permanent pain, and the different types of pain conditions we treat
  • How we help you define your goals and work with you to achieve meaningful outcomes
  • How to harness the mind – body connection to improve your pain management
  • The importance of exercise and how we help you increase your functional activity

Join us every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 12 noon – 1 pm in our Waltham office.

All new patients are encouraged to attend this workshop once, but existing patients who want a “refresher” on how we help you manage chronic pain and what services we provide may attend as well. Space is limited, so please register with our Front Desk prior to attending.

Dr. Counihan’s Monthly Chronic Pain Workshop
Boston PainCare has been recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in chronic pain management b the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for our unique, interdisciplinary program. As part of our patient-centered approach, we offer a monthly workshop on chronic pain management.

Led by Dr. Counihan, each month Boston PainCare presents a different workshop focusing on a unique aspect of successfully managing chronic pain.

Join us the first Wednesday of the month from 12 noon – 1pm in our Waltham office.

All of our patients and their friends, family and caregivers are eligible and encouraged to attend. Space is limited, so please register with our Front Desk prior to attending.

Meditation and Mindful Action

An exciting new workshop led by one of our Behavioral Health Specialists, given on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month

This workshop will offer mindfulness meditation practices along with specific techniques for coping with pain and stress in daily life. Research over the past 30+ years has shown these practices to be beneficial for chronic pain, stress, depression, and insomnia.

Each workshop will include:

  • Meditation practice in a supportive atmosphere
  • Skills training and practice
  • Group discussion
  • Resources and encouragement of home practice

Each one hour workshop is designed to benefit both first-time and returning members.

Opioid Medications & Prescription Safety

Boston PainCare created the BPC Medication Management Program in response to the pain community’s need for access to appropriate medication treatments. The BPC Medication Management Program provides safe and effective medication treatments that are tailored
to meet the individual needs of the patient.

In this workshop:

  • Introduce the BPC Medication Management Program team and Boston PainCare philosophy
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of opioid medications
  • Review the BPC Medication Management Program’s guidelines and policies
  • Provide tips for how to succeed in the BPC Medication Management Program


Understanding Chronic Pain Management

According to a report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), more than 100 million Americans are living with chronic pain, but what is pain? How do you sense it? What factors affect pain perception?

In this workshop:

  • Discuss the different theories of pain perception.
  • Identify how these theories can be used to identify new pain management strategies.
  • Explore the pieces in the chronic pain puzzle and learn how they fit together.
  • Tap into your relaxation response and experience how relaxation strategies can be used to decrease stress and muscle tension.


Maximize Your Pain Medications

An introduction to the different types of pain medications. Learn how to stay organized and on track with doses and how to use your medications to be as active as possible!


Acceptance: Tools to Stop Struggling

“Acceptance” does not mean being passive or giving up, but rather an active willingness to improve your function and quality of life even in the face of pain.

In this workshop:

  • Explore acceptance as a powerful and potentially transformative new relationship with your pain symptoms.
  • Learn helpful coping strategies, including mindfulness meditation, that support acceptance.


Improve Your Activity

Often patients struggle to establish the optimal activity level. Some patients “overdo it” and find themselves stuck in a cycle of activity, pain, and prolonged recovery. Other patients worry about the possibility of increasing their pain and respond by limiting their activity, which ultimately increases pain.

In this workshop:

  • Learn about the relationship between physical activity and pain.
  • Explore how fear can impact your activity.
  • Discuss how to structure your activities to improve function and decrease pain.
  • Plan for how to incorporate these skills into your daily life.


Set and Achieve Your Goals

Goals are only meaningful when they are based on your values, what you want to stand for and what you want to do with your life.

In this workshop:

  • Explore your values.
  • Learn how to set and achieve your goals through simple and realistic strategies.
  • Find your motivation, identify what is important to you, and learn how to achieve it!


Quit Smoking to Improve Pain

Many of the health consequences of smoking are well-known (including lung cancer, heart disease, and COPD), but did you know that cigarette smokers are almost three times more likely to suffer from a chronic pain condition than non-smokers?

In this workshop:

  • Review the ways that smoking can impact pain.
  • Discuss the potential benefits of quitting smoking.
  • Explore some strategies for how to successfully quit.

Whether you’re a former smoker, you’re thinking about quitting, or you’re not even considering quitting right now, all patients are welcome to this workshop and may benefit from attending.


Strategies to Improve Sleep

Sleep disturbance is extremely common among patients suffering from chronic pain and a lack of restorative sleep can have a negative impact on your pain tolerance, mood, and daily function.

In this workshop:

  • Explore the benefits of healthy sleep.
  • Learn concrete steps you can take to improve your sleep.
  • Identify mindfulness meditation strategies that you can use to manage the pain, stress, and difficult thoughts that can interfere with sleep.


Calming the Pain/Anxiety/Depression Connection

Many patients have experienced the relationship between chronic pain and mood firsthand. Chronic pain may cause or worsen symptoms of depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can also affect your pain, both directly and indirectly through sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, lack of energy, and decreased physical activity.

In this workshop:

  • Learn about the impact thoughts and emotions can have on your pain.
  • Discuss cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and its application to pain management.
  • Practice concrete strategies to tackle pain-related thoughts.
  • Identify how these skills can be used in the management of your pain.


Weight Management Strategies for Pain

In this workshop:

  • Learn about the relationship between weight and pain, and the positive impact that weight loss, different food choices, and exercise may have on your chronic pain.
  • Discuss the impact that mood can have on eating.
  • Explore various situational and emotional triggers that may lead to overeating, and learn how to prevent them.
  • Lose weight and maintain the weight loss using a variety of tips specifically for individuals living with chronic pain.


Special Topic: Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Mastering this activity can decrease the intensity, frequency and duration of many forms of chronic pain including migraine!

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn about biofeedback training for pain management
  • Review the evidence for biofeedback training that may be a beneficial addition to your current pain management
  • Test biofeedback in the workshop setting to see if it would be beneficial for your interdisciplinary pain treatment


Special Topic: Complementary Treatments for Chronic Pain

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a broad category of approaches to health problems that fall outside what is considered conventional medical treatment.

In this workshop:

  • Learn about CAM options that apply to pain management such as biofeedback, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and massage
  • Review the evidence for a variety of CAM interventions that may be a beneficial addition to your current pain management
  • Learn about CAM options available at Boston PainCare
  • Practice a relaxation technique designed to reduce stress and tension


Less is More: Opioid Reduction

Be an informed consumer! In this workshop:

  • Review of the potential risks and benefits of taking opioid pain medications long-term.
  • Find your own reasons to consider reducing your medication dose.
  • Learn how Boston PainCare helps patients get the most out of their medications and their lives.


Address the Stress in Your Life

Many have directly experienced the close connection between stress and pain.

In this workshop:

  • Learn about what happens to your body when you’re stressed
  • Understand the interaction between stress and pain
  • Explore strategies to reduce stress and make your pain experience more manageable


Support Group: Chronic Pain

Chronic pain affects more than your body. It can affect your mood, your activity, your sleep, your relationships, and how you think. Talking about your experiences with others who are also coping with chronic pain can help you feel more understood and see that you are not alone.

In this support group:

  • Share your experiences with pain and provide support for one another
  • Share advice and tips about how you cope with your pain
  • Discover new ways of dealing with pain-related problems

A behavioral pain specialist leads this support group.


Support Group: FAST Track Workshop

This 30-minute workshop occurs after our Functional Activities class. If you live with chronic pain, you may have lost the ability to re-engage the workforce after an injury, do daily tasks, or participate in activities you enjoy.

In this support group:

  • Keep the enthusiasm going from the Functional Activities class by sharing fun facts and discussion around the “topic of the day” with others
  • Explore your values and find motivation to do what’s important to you
  • Plan to discover new ways of adding activities back into your life

Family members and caregivers of class participants are welcome to attend.
